It is well known that the distribution of the elements in the molten slag bath is dependent upon the flow rate of the molten slag, the viscosity of the molten slag, the bulk composition of the molten slag bath, and the heat flux to the molten slag bath. In conventional reverberatory furnaces, the elements, or carbon and silicon, are distributed throughout the molten slag bath such that carbon is at a relatively low concentration of about 10 to 20 percent by weight of the molten slag bath, and silicon is at a relatively high concentration of about 10 to 20 percent by weight of the molten slag bath. For example, in the production of a carbon-silicon steel in a conventional vacuum-breathing type of reverberatory furnace, carbon and silicon are distributed throughout the molten slag bath such that carbon is at a relatively low concentration of about 10 to 20 percent by weight of the molten slag bath, and silicon is at a relatively high concentration of about 10 to 20 percent by weight of the molten slag bath. Such conventional molten slag baths are disclosed, for example, in U.S. Pat. No. 5,503,828. In one type of vacuum-breathing type of steel making furnace, a pair of opposed hearth furnaces are connected in a tandem manner by means of a gap between the furnaces. In this type of furnace, both hearth furnaces are charged with molten slag and the molten slag from one furnace is transferred to the other furnace in the gap between the two furnaces. This type of furnace is well known in the industry and referred to as a tandem type of vacuum-breathing steel making furnace. The molten slag is transferred between the two furnaces via transfer pipes, and at a mid-point between the two furnaces, there is a transfer point where the molten slag is transferred from one furnace to the other furnace. Typically, the molten slag is transferred from one furnace to the other furnace at a transfer rate in the range of about 5 to 10 times per minute, or be359ba680
